Details

The aim of RACE (Risk Assessment of Coastal Erosion) is to develop, test and distribute a robust and consistent probabilistic method for assessing the hazard and risk of coastal erosion. A method was required that represented risk and hazard in a manner comparable to RASP (Risk Assessment of flood and coastal defence for Strategic Planning).

This project introduces a risk-based framework, tools and techniques to underpin decision-making in coastal erosion risk management. These offer practical approaches for local authorities to assess risks (probabilities and consequences) of coastal erosion and enable these risks to be reported.

This methodology will help ensure a consistent national approach to flood and erosion risk assessment and management within the framework established in FD2302 (Risk, Uncertainty and Performance Review). The methodology has been taken forward at a national level by the Environment Agency to produce draft coastal erosion risk maps.

This project ran from 2005 to 2006 at a cost of £87,505.
