Details

The management of flooding in the UK has evolved from a focus on local assessment of hard flood defences to a more holistic approach to flood risk management. In response to these changes, there’s a need to develop a science vision for Broad Scale Modelling (BSM). This should recognise common issues across the physical systems and the potential benefits of an integrated decision support system to the planning and management of flood risk.

This project aims to develop a vision of integrated decision support systems to provide strategic direction. It brings together a panel of leading UK research expertise in flood risk assessment and modelling. This is related to catchments, estuaries, coasts and socio-economic issues to identify a set of research needs and priorities.

The technical report produced during this project:

  • scopes out the vision for BSM within a DPSIR (Drivers-Pressures-States-Impacts-Responses) framework
  • summarises technical development and future vision for component areas
  • outlines a programme of integrating research
  • includes recommendations for a phased research programme to achieve the development of a DPSIR-BSM

This will be useful for:

  • funders for flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM) research
  • research managers
  • researchers
  • users of flood and coastal erosion research

This project ran from 2006 to 2007 at a cost of £41,800.
