This report outlines all the research work carried out between April 2002 and October 2003 exploring all the important processes that affect river, estuary and coastal systems. This research was commissioned to make it possible to develop effective and environmentally acceptable flood and coastal defence structures and approaches.

The benefits of studying how processes interact in the long-term means that it’s easier to develop policies for sustainable, long-term flood and coastal defence, rather than responding to problems as they happen.

The project started in 2002 and was completed in 2003 at a cost of £105,900
