You need a certificate from the police to operate as a firearms dealer in Northern Ireland.
You’re a firearms dealer if you manufacture, sell, transfer, repair, test or prove firearms or ammunition.
How to apply
Download an application form from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) website.
You’ll need to provide:
- your details
- your business details
- details of any convictions, including spent convictions

Certificates last for 5 years. You must reapply for a certificate after it expires if you want to carry on operating as a firearms dealer.
The PSNI will tell you what security measures you need to ensure the safe storage of firearms and ammunition.
Fines and penalties
It’s a criminal offence to operate as a firearms dealer without a certificate from the PSNI.
