A marine operator licence limited to small vessels (MEOL SV) allows you to serve as a marine engine operator on UK-registered small vessels with a propulsion (registered) power of between 200 kW and 750 kW, where standards of training and certification and watchkeeping (STCW) requirements do not apply.

£215 including the cost of the oral exam.
What you’ll need to apply
You’ll need to:
- be at least 19 years old
- hold the applicable ancillary and safety course certificates
- hold an approved engine course (AEC) 1 and 2 Certificate of Completion
- hold a valid ENG1 medical fitness certificate or an acceptable equivalent
- pass the MCA oral exam for a MEOL SV
You’ll also need to have completed either of the following:
- 36 months’ onboard service as a dual-purpose deck hand and engineer responsible for the maintenance and servicing of a small vessel of 200 kW or more in propulsion power, of which at least 6 months must be seagoing service in the engineering department
- 24 months’ onboard service as a small vessel engineer responsible for system maintenance on a small vessel of 200 kW or more in propulsion power of which at least 6 months must be seagoing service
How long it lasts
Your MEOL SV does not need to be renewed.
