What Should We Really Be Asking? Aggregated vs. Disaggregated Responses to Household Livelihood Questionnaires.

Abstract

There are many different approaches to collecting data from households. The best method depends on the purpose of the data. For PEN, the aim is to characterize the livelihoods of households and gain insights into behaviour. This presentation considers two general approaches: Highly aggregated (e.g. PRA); and Highly disaggregated (e.g. hh questionnaires). Using these two different approaches, a survey of two sub-samples of the same population (Uganda), the results are compared for: Income portfolios; Expenditure portfolios; and Time use portfolios. Next steps are discussed.
