Vaginal microbicides - what does the future hold?

Abstract

This article reviews the various vaginal microbicides currently being tested for use to prevent transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. It outlines their different mechanisms of action (non-specific antimicrobials, attachment/fusion/entry inhibitors, and intracellular replication inhibitors), potential usefulness and safety profile. Formulations and the problems of evaluating effectiveness are also discussed.
