Using satellite data to insure camels, cows, sheep and goats: IBLI and the development of the world's first insurance for African pastoralists

Abstract

This report profiles the development of the Index-Based Livestock Insurance program (IBLI), the first index-based insurance product, that protects poor pastoralists in drought-stricken areas in Africa from losing their primary asset—livestock. The report uses a case study based perspective to describe the program's inception and development, expansion and lessons learned from the process.
