Understanding immunogenicity - August 2007. How do researchers measure the immune responses induced by AIDS vaccine candidates?

Abstract

The methods used by researchers to measure immunogenicity of AIDS vaccines in phase I and II trials are described. Three approaches are discussed: detecting antibodies using techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; counting the types and amounts of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells; and using the ELISPOT assay to detect CD4+ and CD8+ T cells that are producing cytokines .
