Understanding immune correlates of protection (part II) - December 2006. How can animal models be used to identify the correlates of protection for an AIDS vaccine?

Abstract

The advantages of using animal models of AIDS are discussed. Working with non-human primates allows researchers to conduct studies that would be impossible to do in humans such as testing vaccine containing killed virus or live virus that is disabled. The studies provide clues to the immune response in man enabling improved vaccine design. Animal models also allow exact replication of infections by different researchers.
