Understanding Animal Models Of HIV Infection - October 2008. What Are The Limitations Of The Animal Models Used By Researchers To Evaluate AIDS Vaccine Candidates?

Abstract

Finding an animal model for HIV has proven difficult. The virus exclusively infects and causes disease in humans. This primer outlines the models that have bee used their advantages and disadvantages. The models include macaques infected either with SIV, the monkey version of HIV, or with hybrid viruses made from combinations of SIV and HIV (SHIV). Mouse models have also been used where the mice have been altered to have a human like immune system.
