Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to collate material from a number of sources to try to clarify what is known about travel patterns, the commonality in findings and where research is still needed to help answer unresolved issues. The main factors likely to influence travel demand are examined: city structure; socio-economic characteristics of the traveller; and transport facilities available to the traveller.
