The social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS in poor countries: a review of studies and lessons.

Abstract

This article consists of 6 main sections on the following subjects: 1) early perspectives on the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS (in the late 1980s); 2) what has been learned since 1989 (demographic modelling of population impact, and economic modelling of the impact on health provision and on health-related services); 3) the impact on different sectors (agricultural/rural, with almost no studies on other sectors); 4) social impact at the micro and meso levels (enterprise, household and orphan studies); 5) effects at the level of the social system; and 6) lessons from the social sciences (with suggestions about issues that social scientists should address).
