The prioritisation of mental health as a public health issue in South Africa.

Abstract

It is argued that despite the availability of a range of cost-effective clinical, social and economic interventions, mental health requires more attention in policy development and implementation in South Africa. Sections look at: The Mental Health and Poverty Project, that examines key barriers to making mental health a priority; South Africa's inadequate mental health policy; the gap between policy and practice for prioritisation of mental health at the provincial level; the barriers to improved prioritisation; and recommendations to promote prioritisation of mental health.
