The Dairy Sector and Poverty Reduction: A FAO Perspective

Abstract

This presentation was given at the 7th IFCN Dairy Conference, held in Szczecin, Poland, 24 May 2006. One in three farmers lives in extreme poverty; the presenters propose livestock as having high potential for farmers to increase returns from their land. Milk, a high-value commodity, is in growing demand in low-income households and this can be met by small-holder farmers. The presentation concludes that there is ample scope for low-cost productivity increases and welfare improvment in the small-holder livestock sector.
