Teacher motivation and incentives in Malawi

Abstract

The study has established serious motivational problems affecting teachers in Malawi at both primary and secondary levels, which have been acknowledged by government officials, trade union leaders, and other key stakeholders. Teacher motivation and job satisfaction are strongly determined by both pecuniary factors, such as levels of pay and other material benefits, and non-pecuniary factors, in particular living and working conditions and conditions of service.
