Synthetic peroxides: a viable alternative to artemisinins.

Abstract

This presentation describes the work of the Medicines for Malaria Venture and four partner organizations to develop synthetic peroxides as an alternative to artemisinin for the treatment of malaria. The first compound gave disappointing results when tested in patients, as it broke down rapidly in infected blood, but animal studies of potential second-generation compounds gave promising results. It was hoped that a product could be launched in 2013.
