Summary of Submission on Maternal Morbidity.

Abstract

This document is the written evidence submitted by Towards 4+5 researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to the UK All Party Parliamentary group on Population, Development and Reproductive health, for an inquiry focussing on maternal morbidity. It starts by clarifying where research on maternal morbidity and health systems fits in the overall situation, arguing that study of morbidity is neglected at the expense of that on mortality. It then covers methods for measuring morbidity, followed by specific issues: unwanted pregnancies; unsafe abortion; obstetric morbidity and long-term consequences; malaria infections; and posnatal depression.
