Saffron Production and Farmer Perceptions in Pashtun Zarghun District of Herat

Abstract

This report is part of RALF Project 02-02, \"Research in sustainable production and successful marketing of saffron as an alternative to opium poppy cultivation\", and studies the farm economics and farmer perception of growing saffron. The potential of saffron to replace part of Afghan farmer's dependency on poppy cultivation is discussed on the basis of water use, legality and religious acceptibility. The current status of saffron as a crop is outlined. The report also deals with the typical characteristics of target farms in Afghanistan.
