Rice-fish culture supporting the rural poor.

Abstract

This article outlines the work done by the Systems Group at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, into developing and using participatory research techniques to promote the culture of fish in flooded rice fields. Fish culture of introduced species such as carp and tilapia, and also of wild species, frogs and crabs is important to provide extra income and also food for many rural farmers and tends to lead in turn to greater rice yields.
