This is an introductory presentation to the DACAAR Saffron Project in Herat, Afghanistan; the project was conducted by Washington State University, USA, backed by RALF funding. The problems of saffron marketing are discussed: diseases of saffron croci; competition; organisation; failure to meet quality standards; and illegal saffron trade. Four project outputs were outlined: study of farm economics; study of saffron markets; sharing of knowledge; and formation of a producer's association.
