Abstract

This article describes an investigation of the barriers to developing health social science research capacity in East Africa; it is based on an article published in Social Science and Medicine which describes the study at greater length. The predominance of individually contracted research consultancies was identified as a significant barrier, and suggestions are made for resolving this problem.
