Prostitution or partnership? Wifestyles in Tanzanian artisanal gold-mining settlements.

Abstract

Contrary to the popular view that women heavily depend on prostitution in urban mining settlements, our findings indicate that they are generally engaged in a range of income-earning activities. A woman is likely to be providing material support to her conjugal partner during lulls in mining output, given that her earnings tend to be more regularized than that of her mining boyfriend.
