Project on enhanced accessibility for persons with disabilities living in urban areas: India country report.

Abstract

The issue of accessibility for persons with disabilities in India is one which has gained attention only in recent times. Currently, the built environment is hardly accessible for persons with disabilities. Buildings, roads, public transport etc., are far from accessible. Even while designing new public places, little or no attempt is being made to incorporate the concerns of persons with disabilities. Furthermore, demographic trends in India indicate a greater share of the elderly and infirm in the total population over the next few years.

The lack of accessibility for persons with disabilities hinders these persons from interacting positively with the rest of the society. More often than not, it confines these people to their homes and forces them to lead a life of dependency.

There have been a few developments to enhance the accessibility for persons with disabilities but these have been piecemeal rather than holistic in nature.
