Abstract

This paper examines the politics of the Maratha elite in initiation and institutionalisation of the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) since the mid 1960s to 2001. It argues that the political contestation and the consequent intervention of the Maratha elite was instrumental in introducing and later shaping the EGS.
