Participatory Approach to Core Area Development. A Guide to Good Practice. Fact Sheet 5: Exploring Community Organisation.

Abstract

The community occupying land ripe for commercial development is usually

the least informed in the process of what is planned for them, too often this

situation results in the arbitrary displacement of the urban poor to the city

periphery and a gradual gentrification of core areas into a range of

commercial uses.

To overcome these problems, individuals and communities need to strengthen their rights to land or property and identify from the different

types of legal housing institutions that which could be established to manage their long-term residential and livelihood interests.

This Fact Sheet sets the current urban scene and suggests ways and means within the topic of Exploring Community Organisation towards achieving sustainable mixed use core area development.
