Abstract

The Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Research and Learning in Africa (SAIRLA) funded University of Lund-led research project ‘AFRINT IV’ analysed long-term data from smallholders in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia to understand how gender, generation, and land-holding size affect their capacity to increase agricultural productivity. This background note assesses the policy frameworks in the 3 countries in terms of support to sustainability, the inclusion of gender and age, intra-household relations and the role of local institutions.
