Outlook: Neglected Diseases.

Abstract

This supplementary section of the journal contains several short articles which examine what can be done to stimulate the development of effective medicines for neglected tropical diseases and deliver them to the people who need them most. Subjects include: the need for academics to become more involved in the development of new drugs; obstacles to the uptake of health-related biotechnology in developing countries; the need for governments to help accelerate the development of drugs for these diseases; how to scale up drug discovery networks; the need for improved infrastructure to deliver treatments to those who need them; the need for appropriate patent protection to incentivise the private sector to develop new drugs; the possibility of differential pricing in rich and poor countries; and the need for better arrangements to stimulate drug development and production in Brazil.
