More than money? Cash transfers and adolescent girls in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

Where are we on the HIV prevention landscape for girls? This paper and poster presentation by STRIVE Research Director Charlotte Watts and Chief Executive Lori Heise for AIDS 2012 argues that there's a growing expertise but mixed evidence on how to address adolescent girls' HIV vulnerability.

The paper uses the example of the IMAGE study, which found that micro-finance alone reduced poverty but did not empower women or impact on violence. Where micro-finance and gender training were combined, broader impacts were achieved.
