Abstract

This fact sheet (available in English, French, Spanish and German) introduces the use of vaginal microbicides for HIV/AIDS control and describes the importance of how drugs are delivered, the need for new types of vaginal microbicide formulation in addition the to the gels and creams hitherto used, the need for formulations that do not depend on being applied at the time of sexual intercourse, the potential for vaginal rings for microbicide delivery, and studies of what is most acceptable among the women for whom the products are intended.
