Microbicides: Meeting the challenge of HIV prevention in women.

Abstract

This document describes a briefing meeting held in Brussels, Belgium on 7th October 2005. It summarizes the presentations, which are on the following subjects: welcoming remarks; why the 'ABC' advice on AIDS prevention fails women in Africa; the state of research and development of microbicides for HIV prevention; responding to policymakers' concerns about microbicides; an introduction to microbicides and the European agenda; HIV/AIDS research in the European Union's 6th Research Framework Programme; partnering between a pharmaceutical company and the International Partnership for Microbicides to develop a microbicide; the perspective of the European Commission's DG Development; and concluding remarks. Links are provided to some of the presentations, on the website of the Global Campaign for Microbicides (who with the IPM were the joint organisers of the meeting).
