Microbicides: an essential HIV prevention strategy for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Abstract

This fact sheet (available in English, French, Spanish and German) is an updated version of the executive summary of the policy paper of the same title published in 2005. It argues, in the light of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the disproportionate vulnerability of women and girls, that a female-controlled method of reducing transmission, such as a microbicide, is necessary for HIV control and therefore for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals; and it calls for greater financial resources and political leadership to help achieve this.
