Microbicides: an essential HIV prevention strategy for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Abstract

This document (available in English and French) argues, in the light of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the disproportionate vulnerability of women and girls, that vaginal microbicides (a female-controlled method of reducing transmission) are necessary if the Millennium Development Goals are to be met. Because of the effects of HIV/AIDS on development in general, this applies, not only to Goal 6 (combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases) but to the majority of the others as well.
