Making Livestock Policies Better Serve the Interests of Vietnam's Poor

Abstract

This policy briefing document is based on Working Paper No. 5.

As the economy of Vietnam changes from a centrally planned system to a market-orientated one, it is important that livestock producers are considered during policy formulation to address the needs of the poor. The livestock sector is a high potential one, which is at risk of being neglected in favour of large-scale industrial growth. Recommendations for promoting rural development, reforming trade policies, enhancing policymaking capacity, improving service provision, and strengthening microfinancing institutions are made.
