Livestock - A Resource Neglected in Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers

Abstract

This policy briefing is based on Working Paper No. 1.

The briefing summarises the origins and reasons for existence of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers, used to enhance the interactions between donors and recipient countries for effective poverty reduction. The potential of livestock for poverty reduction is belived to be under-represented in PRSPs, despite the extent to which developing countries often depend on that sector of production.

It is recommended that the profile of livestock be raised to the same level as that of other agricultural sectors and that strategies for livestock sectors be based on recent data and poor-relevant issues.
