Lessons learned for Fulwar Toli from an exposure visit to Jabarrah

Abstract

This article discusses the formation of four self-help groups in Fulwar Toli village, India, following lessons learned from previous groups formed in Jabarrah Cluster, West Bengal. The groups' norms and activities are described. They comprise the Ambedkar Carrier Library Group for the improvement of knowledge and education; a women’s group comprising spouses of fishermen and they are involved in fish selling; the Devi Mansa Group with eleven women members who are all involved in agriculture activities; the Fishermen’s Self-Help Group with 28 men members which is mainly involved with aquaculture. The benefits of the self-help groups are discussed.
