Issue brief: Microbicide research and development.
Abstract
This document (also available in French and Spanish) provides an introduction to the use of vaginal microbicides to control HIV transmission. It describes the different types of microbicide, how they work, which stage of development they are at, the issue of drug resistance, and the research and development programme of the International Partnership for Microbicides (drug discovery, formulations and delivery systems, and clinical trials). It concludes that a safe and effective microbicide will be a vital tool for HIV prevention, but that continued funding and effort are needed to achieve this aim.
