Investing in AIDS Vaccines: Estimated Resource Required to Accelerate Research and Development

Abstract

This paper sets out IAVI's assessment of the total level of spending needed for AIDS vaccine research and development (R&D) in the coming years and the gap between current and projected spending, based upon IAVI policy research findings. To achieve the expansion of viable vaccine candidate throughput, raise the overall quality of the pipeline, and shorten time in phase, we estimate that R&D spending needs to rise from the current (2004) level of around US$690 million a year to approximately US$1.15 to US$1.2 billion a year.
