Health insurance for the poor, India.
Abstract
A search for alternative mechanisms for meeting the healthcare needs of the poor in India has given rise to a variety of new health insurance initiatives. This paper describes three such initiatives, namely micro-health insurance, the Yeshasvini scheme in Karnataka state, and the national Universal Health Insurance scheme. The objectives, lessons learned, background, and details of the three schemes are outlined.
