The Department for International Development (DFID) is widening the
scope of its natural resources research by focusing explicitly on
innovation systems (IS) to reduce poverty. Many of the elements of the
approach were implicit in the 11-year Renewable Natural Resources
Research Strategy (RNRRS), which ran from 1995 to 2006, and much can be
learned from that experience.
This Brief explains what is meant by IS, shares the RNRRS's practical
experience of IS and identifies the challenges that lie ahead.
