Epidemiology sustaining rural livelihoods into the new millennium.

Abstract

This brief note describes the role of epidemiology in sustaining rural livelihoods, using as an example a study on the epidemiology of white spot disease of prawns which affects communities in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, practising a centuries' old sustainable system of integrated rice-shrimp farming. White spot disease means damage to the farming system, nutritional deficiency, financial loss, social upheaval and increased vulnerability.
