Enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities living in urban areas: a small-scale demonstration project in Blantyre, Malawi.

Abstract

The aim of this project was to enhance access into the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, particularly for people with disabilities. This overall aim was to be achieved through the construction of a pathway (with kerb cuts at the end) from the bus stand into the premises of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, the installation of a disabled friendly pedestrian crossing close to the hospital entrance, the renovation of the bus stand and lastly, the construction of a handrail along the road to prevent minibuses using footpaths as passenger pick-up and dropping points.
