Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation: Marine and Coastal Situational Analysis. Appendix 2: Western Indian Ocean Regional Assessment and Institutional Analysis.

Abstract

The East African marine ecoregion (EAME), including the core countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, was identified as a key region for addressing the relationship between ecosystem services and poverty. This report gives an overview of the region, including discussions of poverty and ecosystems, and assesses key issues and drivers of changes to ecosystems and their services, including human population growth, loss of biodiversity, over-exploitation of natural resources, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and inadequate government. Institutional analyses for Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique are presented.
