Designing competition policy.

Abstract

In the current climate of privatisation and more open trade it is essential that developing countries compete more effectively. This brief looks at: competition in context; the objectives of competition policy; public interest in competition policy; anti-competitive practices; the abuse of dominance; and mergers and acquisitions. Case studies considered include the Shell Tepco merger in South Africa, and The EON - Proton Edar car industry case that illustrates how Malaysia's industrial policy suffers as a result of the lack of a formal competition agency.
