Abstract

This article introduces a supplement to the journal, containing mainly reviews based on a selection of papers from a conference on the demographic and socioeconomic impact of AIDS held in Durban, South Africa, on 26–28 March 2003. It describes and discusses their content, and that of other papers from the conference, under the headings of adult mortality, child mortality, fertility, population and family structure, accuracy of estimates of impact, and (at the greatest length) socioeconomic impact.
