Demand-Oriented Approaches to HPAI Risk Management

Abstract

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) represents a significant public health concern. Most efforts to control the spread of the disease have been targeted at the supply side of the poultry industry, in the form of culls and meat sale restrictions, to varying degrees of success.

This research report examines how the demand side of poultry markets can play a supportive role in reducing disease infection risks. To the extent consumers care for their health and are willing to pay extra for certified HPAI-free poultry products, there may be options for financing and developing more bio-secure products and safer poultry supply chains.
