Abstract

This presentation introduces the concept of vaginal microbicides for HIV prevention; describes the features of early-generation and next-generation (antiretroviral-based) microbicides, the results of efficacy trials, problems with such trials, and the drug development process; and summarizes the current position and remaining uncertainties.
