Abstract

This briefing reviews CRISE research on why some multi-ethnic countries are peaceful while others experience violent conflict. The fundamental conclusion of CRISE research is that the presence of large horizontal inequalities (HIs), or inequalities among salient identity groups, increases the risk of violent conflict. Such inequalities may be economic, social or political or concern cultural status.
