Corrientes River: a landmark case in the development of the Amazonian indigenous movement

Abstract

This section describes the context in which the oil company set up and ran its exploitation activities in the Corrientes River Basin and how the affected population became aware of the impacts, learned of its rights, forged alliances, and designed and put into action strategies which led to it negotiating an agreement with the company and the government to redress and to compensate damages through health and development programs. For the purpose of understanding, it will analyse the social movement that was birthed out of and that became the main player in the experience as well as the processes that resulted in its creation.
