Abstract

Every day more than 35,000 people die from AIDS, TB, malaria, and neglected diseases. These diseases occur predominantly in low- and middle-income countries, where they cause illness and premature death, perpetuate poverty and stunt economic growth. Yet only a very small fraction of total spending on health R&D worldwide (approximately US $21 billion out of US $210 billion) is dedicated to creating new technologies for diseases of the developing world.
