Consultative paper submitted by the PDP group to the European Commission's Green Paper on the European Research Area.
Every day more than 35,000 people die from AIDS, TB, malaria, and neglected diseases. These diseases occur predominantly in low- and middle-income countries, where they cause illness and premature death, perpetuate poverty and stunt economic growth. Yet only a very small fraction of total spending on health R&D worldwide (approximately US $21 billion out of US $210 billion) is dedicated to creating new technologies for diseases of the developing world.
